Jellig resigns while McCartney assumes prior role in South Brunswick

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Dr. Jerry Jellig made an appearance at the most recent school board meeting to announce his resignation as superintendent.

“The South Brunswick Board of Education unanimously accepted the resignation of Dr. Jellig at its meeting on Monday, May 23, 2016. The parties wished each other well in their respective future endeavors,” Board President Stephen Parker said.

The South Brunswick Education Association had lodged grievances against Jellig since November 2014 – just five months after he joined the district – including intimidation in the work place, loss of contractual time, questionable hiring practices and inappropriate administrative conduct, according to association President John Lolli.

Although Director of Human Resources Richard Chromey had been voted interim superintendent on May 9, the same night Jellig was put on leave of absence, the school board unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Gary McCartney on May 23 as interim superintendent for the period May 24, 2016, through May 23, 2017. McCartney served as South Brunswick’s superintendent from 2004-14.

In addition, Assistant Superintendent Joanne Kerekes was approved for her retirement on April 25, which would have been effective Aug. 1, “but she asked that we take action to rescind her resignation, which the board did unanimously,” Parker said.
