SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Another successful health fair was held by the Indian Health Camp of New Jersey to offer health screenings, disease awareness and prevention information to area residents.
Dozens of people gathered at the Durga Temple in South Brunswick on Aug. 28 for the fifth consecutive year at this location and the 18th year overall.
The health fair was attended by more than 125 people above the age of 40 who were uninsured or underinsured. The health screening services included blood test, EKG, vision screening for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, physical examination, cardiology, neurology and physical therapy counseling, various types of cancer screening and prevention education, chronic disease self-management for diabetes and stroke education, dietary counseling, pharmacy counseling, flu shots and many other ancillary services to pre-registered qualified participants.
Various specialists including a cardiologist, neurologist, internal medicine, ophthalmologist, endocrinologist and other allied health care professionals including physical therapist, dietitian, pharmacist, nurses, medical students, phlebotomists, EKG techs, medical assistants, social workers and other non-medical volunteers and students provided services to screen and educate patients on diabetes, hypertension, cardiac diseases, high cholesterol, various types of cancer screening and education and other chronic debilitating diseases specifically targeted to the South Asian population, according to a statement prepared by the Indian Health Camp.
The State of New Jersey Commission for the Blind provided eye screenings including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, which is prevalent among the Indian population, according to the statement, and a leading cause of diminished vision and blindness.
Under the clinical and administrative leadership of Dr. Ashok Patel and Dr. Tushar Patel, the activities were organized to bring the support from various other health care organizations such as Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro, Rutgers University and Walgreens. Rupen Patel of Accurate Diagnostic Labs provided basic blood test services.
Indian Health Camp of New Jersey will hold its last health fair of 2016 on Nov. 13 at Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Secaucus. The registration form is available at www.IHCNJ.org.
