South Brunswick director honored for 35 years of service

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — The New Jersey Recreation and Park Association (NJRPA) awarded the Association Service Award to the director of Parks and Recreation in South Brunswick.

Tom Morris was honored during the NJRPA Annual Awards banquet in Atlantic City on March 7. He has been an active member of NJRPA for 35 years, taking on just about every role within NJRPA.

Morris’ career started in the Borough of Leonia in 1982 as a program supervisor, according to a statement prepared by the NJRPA. In 1985, he accepted the position of recreation director in Englewood, and then in 1989 he moved on to his current position as director of Parks and Recreation for the Township of South Brunswick.

Over the years, Morris has served NJRPA on various committees and held many different offices. He has been on the Annual Conference Committee since 1998; Membership Committee; NJRPA Annual Golf Outing Committee as a member and chairperson; William Morton Playground Olympics Committee; and Green Acres liaison and district chair for Districts I and IV.

He held executive board positions, including member-at-large, vice president, NJRPA president-elect, NJRPA president from 2010-11 and NJRPA past president. He also served as NRPA chairperson for the Presidents Council from 2010-12.

In 2009, Morris was the recipient of the Michael B. Berman Award for Administrative Excellence, the highest honor NJRPA can award to one of its own.
