2-year-old from South Brunswick died after allegedly ingesting mother’s methadone

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – A South Brunswick mother has been charged with causing the death of her 2-year-old son after he allegedly ingested her methadone.

Lynn Bergans, 34, was charged on June 26 with reckless manslaughter and endangering the welfare of the child in the second degree, according to a statement released by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Raymond Hayducka of the South Brunswick Police Department.

Bergans was charged during an investigation by Detective Timothy Hoover of the South Brunswick Police Department and Detective David Abromaitis of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

On May 15, South Brunswick police responded to Sandhill Road in South Brunswick to find an unresponsive two-year-old boy. Efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead, according to reports.

During the investigation, it was determined that the child ingested a combination of water and methadone, which was prescribed to the mother, officials said. Toxicology results confirmed that the child died from a methadone overdose.

Bergans is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick pending her initial court appearance in New Brunswick.

Anyone with information should call Hoover at 732-329-4646, or Abromaitis at 732-745-4436.
