SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The latest statistics related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic from Governor Phil Murphy’s office on April 2 include 3,489 new positive test results in New Jersey for a statewide total of 25,590.
South Brunswick was notified of one new case, a female in her 20s, who is recovering at home. South Brunswick now has a total of 47 positive cases, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.
Of the statewide deaths, 1% were less than 30 years of age, while 47% were over the age of 80 with 39% of that group documenting preexisting conditions. In addition, 21% of the individuals who died were associated with long-term care facilities, according to the statement.
The 182 new deaths reported on April 2, a 51% increase from April 1, were more than the sum of the first 15 days since the state reported its first death, according to the statement.
New Jersey has completed a total of 59,110 tests with 43% of the tests coming back positive as of April 2, according to the statement.
Long-term care facilities are a big concern for New Jersey, state Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said on April 2, according to the statement. Of the 375 long-term care facilities in the state, 110 have confirmed at least one coronavirus case.
Persichilli said she did not have figures for how many people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the state have been hospitalized, compared to how many are home or recovering, according to the statement.
In light of new data, along with evidence of widespread transmission in communities across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the community use of cloth masks as an additional public health measure people can take to prevent the spread of virus to those around them, according to the statement.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been constructing a 250-bed FEMA medical station at the Meadowlands, which officials said will serve as a step-down facility for people being hospitalized, according to the statement. Three other sites will follow in Edison, Atlantic City and another to be determined. The Edison site, which will have two hospitals totaling 500 beds, is scheduled to open April 8.
The federal government has clarified how Social Security recipients will get their stimulus checks from the coronavirus relief package starting April 17. The Treasury Department said that Social Security recipients won’t have to file a tax return to get their stimulus payment. Instead, it will go out automatically, according to the statement. The IRS will use the information Social Security has on file to distribute the benefit.
