The South Brunswick March for Justice was a peaceful rally attended by several hundred people on June 12.
However, around 5 p.m. three protesters were injured when three deer ran from the property of South Brunswick High School on Ridge Road, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.
Officers working the event immediately provided medical aid until EMS arrived, according to the statement.
One woman in her 60s received a serious head injury and was take to an area hospital; she was listed in critical but stable position as of 9 p.m. June 12, according to Deputy Chief Jim Ryan. Two others were treated on scene.
Separate from the deer incident, two people suffered heat-related issues and were treated by EMS, he said.
Two South Brunswick High School alumnae, Essence Baker and Jada-Rae Poku, organized the event and walked alongside the South Brunswick community with the message “Black lives matter, and we demand justice.”
The 3.3-mile march was set to begin and end at the high school.
“Having grown up in our lovely town, we have always loved being able to look at our fellow classmates and neighbors and to see so much diversity. It is that diversity that we aim to continue to unite and encourage,” the two said in a press release.
