SOUTH BRUNSWICK – After last week’s significant increase, this week’s total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in South Brunswick has once again dropped into single digits, in keeping with the weekly numbers since June 14.
Six new cases were reported last week, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management on Sept. 21.
One factor which may have led to last week’s increase was a connection to students being tested upon returning to college, according to the statement. The Health Department advised us that college students who test positive, no matter where they are attending college, may still have their results listed under their hometown. Therefore, last week’s increase may have reflected South Brunswick students away at college, and not necessarily an increase in the community.
This week’s numbers are back in line with statistics for the past 14 weeks, according to the statement.
The average age of the six people who tested positive last week was 40 years of age. In addition to those six new cases, officials were informed of three additional cases confirmed from previous months, bringing the total number of COVID-positive cases in the township to 522 since March.
This number reflects both residents and people living in long-term care facilities in the township, according to the statement.
Middlesex County Health Department advises there are no additional deaths of South Brunswick residents connected to COVID. Currently, 32 have passed away from the virus thus far: 17 men and 15 women. The average age of the persons who passed away is 76. Half of all the people who passed away were living in or connected to long-term care facilities in South Brunswick, according to the statement.
Middlesex County has a total of 19,089 residents who have tested positive.
Statewide, 349 people are hospitalized from COVID, down from a high of more than 8,000 in April, according to the statement.
Testing results still take an extended period of time in many cases. Some results can take up to a week to come back, according to the statement.

Those wishing to be tested will be required to make an appointment online and meet a set of criteria.
