OLD BRIDGE – Middle school students have been spending their time making corsages and boutonnieres for attendees of their upcoming senior citizens prom.

The initial “Winter Wonderland” dance was postponed due to inclement weather, but the event will now be held 1:30-3:30 p.m. on March 4 at the Reformed Church Home, Route 18, Old Bridge.

About 25 members of the Carl Sandburg Middle School Student Council will be dressed in formal attire to give the seniors “a night to remember.” The students will enter the prom with the seniors on a red carpet, which will be provided by the Reformed Church Home.

Teacher Christine Bracken said the students made the winter decorations for the prom and also organized activities, which will include playing “Name That Tune” with students paired up with seniors. In addition, a deejay will provide music and there will be a karaoke machine to sing songs.

Other guests, who were invited to what the students hope will be an annual event, include members of the Old Bridge Board of Education, Schools Superintendent David Cittadino and Assistant Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Hoeker.

This activity is just one of the many that students in the Old Bridge School District have initiated after Cittadino challenged them, along with their teachers, to complete random acts of kindness. He also issued a challenge to teachers and staff to complete random acts of kindness matching their ages in number, then document them, and submit their stories to him to explain what they did.

Cittadino emphasized the importance of “paying it forward” in his opening remarks to district administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries and staff at the annual Welcome Back to School meeting in September.
