Weather is cold but the tournaments are heating up in local sports

The road to Atlantic City and the NJSIAA Individual Wrestling Championships starts this weekend with the District Championships.

The area high schools that are hosting them are-Woodbridge, District 19, Feb. 20; South Brunswick, District 20, Feb. 20; Manalapan, District 21, Feb. 20; and Red Bank Regional, District 22, Feb. 19-20.

The basketball showcases this weekend are the conference championships.

The Shore Conference Tournament is holding its quarterfinals at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft on Jan. 20 and 21. On the 20th, the girls are up with their four games. St. John Vianney is the top seed. On the 21st, it’s the boys turn for its quadruple of games. Mater Dei is the No. 1 seed for the first time.

The Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament quarterfinals are also at one site, New Brunswick High School. Monroe is the top-seed for the girls who play their quarterfinals on Feb. 20. St. Joseph’s Metuchen is the top seed for the boys who hold their quarterfinals on Feb. 21.

The NJSIAA Group Indoor Track and field Championships are Feb. 19 and 20 at the Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River.

Groups I and IV are up on the 19th and Groups II and III plus Non-Public A and B go on the 20th.

The Community Center in Woodbridge will be the site for the Great Middlesex Conference Cup ice hockey tournament final on Feb, 20. Four-time defending champion St. Joseph’s Metuchen is the No. 1 seed and Woodbridge, No. 2.

The Shore Conference’s Handchen Cup and Dowd Cup ice hockey finals are Feb. 18 at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall Township.

Top seed Middletown North is playing No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven for the Handchen Cup while No. 6 Southern is playing No. 7 Middletown South for the Dowd Cup.
