Councilman Joseph Reid said the recreation committee has been discussing different spaces for a community garden, including placing it near the Maple Street Pavilion.

He said they are open to any suggestions for flat land that draws in sunlight and has a water source nearby.

“This is good for the residents,” he said. adding that he has observed how successful a community garden has been in Plainsboro where he works.

Mayor Christopher Slavicek said the goal is for the community garden to be at no expense to taxpayers.

He said it would be a good idea for Eagle Scout projects, and also suggested seeking input from members of the Jamesburg Garden Club.

Resident Kathleen Williamson, who noted she is a Master Gardener, said the development of a community garden has been on her mind for quite a while.

She said borough officials can get in contact with the Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County for grant assistance.

Williamson said along with a community garden, a children’s garden is a great idea – she said children can learn how to grow pizza toppings and then get local pizzerias to sponsor the garden, for example.

Reid said any suggestions can be forwarded to him at j.reid@helmettaboro.com.
