The Monroe Library will hold its Adult Summer Reading Contest through Aug. 31. Pick up a book and read this summer for a chance to win a weekly prize.
Lectures on the past 100 years of American history will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesdays: World War II, Aug. 2; The Cold War and the Korean War and McCarthyism, Aug. 16; and The Affluent Society and the Civil Rights Movement, Aug. 23.
Beginner Crochet with Sandra Kandel will be held 11 a.m. on Aug. 3, 10 and 17.
International Films sponsored by The Friends of the Library will be shown at 2 and 6:30 p.m. Thursdays: 2012 Chilean drama about 1988 referendum, Aug. 4; 2013 Mexican comedy about a man and his estranged wife, Aug. 11; and 2004 Italian drama about a father and handicapped son, Aug. 18. All films will have English subtitles. Tickets are $1 each.
Sit-N-Stitch projects will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 5 and 19. Bring your own materials.
A poetry reading group and workshop is set for 11 a.m. Aug. 5.
Friday Afternoon Movies include the true story of US Coast Guard rescue off of Cape Cod on Aug. 5; Jesse Owens’ quest in the 1936 Olympics on Aug. 12; and an animated film about a city of civilized animals on Aug. 19. All films begin at 2 p.m.
The Coupon Club will meet 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 8.
The Genealogy Club will meet 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 10.
Guest Speaker Special Agent Gregory Saunders of the Drug Enforcement Administration will present trafficking trends in the illegal drug trade after a screening of “Kingdom of Shadows” at 1 p.m., Aug. 13, about the U.S.-Mexican drug war.
The International Book Club will meet at 10:30 a.m., Aug. 16, to discuss “Aquarium” by David Vann.
Coloring for Adults will take place at 1:30 p.m., Aug. 18.
The Library Board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 15. The Friends of the Library will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23.
