HOWELL – Community events will continue to be held in the former Southard School, Kent Road, under the terms of an agreement between the Township Council and the Howell K-8 School District Board of Education.

During a recent meeting, members of the council passed a resolution to extend the original five-year deal that took effect Aug. 8, 2011, for another five years.

The agreement permits the township to hold recreation and community-based programs in the building that was renamed the Howell Community Enrichment Center at Southard School.

The Howell Police Athletic League is among the organizations that offer programming at the former elementary school.

According to the resolution, the township and the school board wanted to renew the agreement for another five years. All terms and conditions of the agreement that were in effect will remain in effect, according to the resolution.

School district administrators closed the Southard School at the end of the 2008-09 school year in the face of declining enrollment in Howell’s elementary schools and middle schools.

In other business on Aug. 15, the council passed a resolution authorizing a shared services agreement between Howell and Farmingdale. Under the terms of the agreement, Howell will provide certain public works services to Farmingdale.
