Kwanzaa event to feature historical interpretations

The Metuchen Edison Area Branch of the NAACP will celebrate its annual Kwanzaa from 7-9 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Stelton Community Center Auditorium, 328 Plainfield Ave., Edison.

The event is free and will feature actress Dr. Daisy Century, who has taught for over 20 years in the Philadelphia school system as an award-winning science teacher. She performs one-woman shows of seven historical women, such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Madam CJ Walker, Bessie Coleman, Mary Fields, Phillis Wheatley and Hatshepsut. Century is also a published author, writing under the name Emily Nelson, and is an accomplished singer.

Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration that honors African heritage in African-American culture and is observed from Dec. 26-Jan. 1.
