College-planning seminar scheduled at OBHS

A free college-planning financial workshop is planned for 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Old Bridge High School (OBHS), 4209 Route 516. Guest presenter will be Doug Schorpp of Schorpp Capital, East Brunswick.

The event will focus on high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Topics of discussion will include how to increase college-related tax deductions and tax credits; how to pick colleges that will give the best financial-aid packages; how to send a student to an expensive private university for less than a state school; assets taken into consideration when the Department of Education calculates the Expected Family Contribution (EFC); how to pay for college without relying on 529 plans, private student loans or retirement accounts; how to develop a customized plan to meet college costs; and how to lower out-of-pocket costs.
