WEST LONG BRANCH — The new, innovative art exhibit, “Women in the World: A Visual Perspective,” is on display at three locations.
The free exhibit is being presented by Women in Media-Newark and is open to the public.
A special segment of the exhibit will be on display at Rutgers Paul Robeson Art Gallery, Monmouth University’s Pollak Gallery and New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Victoria Lobby.
The art exhibit will be part of Newark’s eighth annual Women’s History Month Film Festival, which will be held at the Pollak Theatre on April 3 at 7:30 p.m.
The exhibit is curated by well-known New Jersey artists Gladys Barker Grauer and Adrienne Wheeler. It aims to give the international collection of women artists a voice on their individual interpretations of the theme.
According to Grauer and Wheeler, despite social, economic and educational subjugation, women throughout the planet are strong, innovative, resourceful and determined to triumph over adversity.
Artists who were interested were asked to submit work that could relate in some way to the theme.
As stated by Grauer and Wheeler, close to 40 professional women, painters and photographers responded to their invitation. They had to choose from over 200 pieces of artwork.
This exhibit will include different methods and techniques, such as photography, sculptures, oils and prints.
The schedule for the exhibit is as follows:
- Pollak Gallery at Monmouth University, 400 Cedar Ave., West Long Branch. Opening reception at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 10. Exhibiting through March 24. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Featured works include “Grace Sneaking Past Mortality,” which shows the beauty of the aged body by Grace Graupe Pillard, “The Peacock Dance” from Toni Thomas’ Chinatown Series, and “Mom,” which features Caren King Choi’s technique of using minute pieces of paper to form figures.
- Rutgers Paul Robeson Art Gallery, 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Newark. Opening reception at 5 p.m. Feb. 23. Exhibiting through March 29. Gallery hours are 12-5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; 12-8 p.m. Thursday; and 12-5 p.m. Saturday. Featured works will include “Love,” octogenarian sculptor Dolores Stewart’s Easter hat, and “Eleanor Bumpurs,” Danielle Scott’s tribute to Bumpurs, who was slain.
- New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Victoria Lobby, 1 Sarah Vaughan Way, Newark. Opening reception at 5:30 p.m. on March 1. Exhibiting through March 29. Gallery hours vary. Featured works include “Immigrant Moment” from Aileen Bassis as well as works from Newark Print shop founder Lisa Conrad.
