PLUMSTED – Investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office have conducted interviews and believe a juvenile may be responsible for placing an explosive device in a mailbox at a Plumsted Township residence.
In a press release issued Feb. 27, the prosecutor’s office said that at 10:50 a.m. Feb. 25, Plumsted police officers were dispatched to 3 Brookwood Drive to investigate a report of a suspicious device in a mailbox.
The officers observed two cylindrical devices taped to a larger cylindrical device, according to the press release.
The prosecutor’s office said police requested the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office bomb-sniffing canine.
Other units that responded were the sheriff’s office Crime Scene Investigations division, the New Jersey State Police bomb squad and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Unit.
Following an investigation, the scene was cleared by the state police bomb squad.
According to the press release, an examination of the device by members of the Arson Unit determined it consisted of two small firecrackers taped to an aerosol spray can. Officials said the device did not function.
Plumsted Detective A.J. Mantz will continue the investigation, according to the prosecutor’s office. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 609-758-7185.
