Children and teens will have the opportunity to explore Finch robots through four new classes at the Old Bridge Library. Sessions will be held at both branches of the library.

The Finch is a small robot invented by Carnegie Mellon’s CREATE lab to promote computer science education. It was designed to inspire students by providing them a tangible and physical representation of coding.  The Finch can support more than a dozen programming languages, and can be used by children as young as five years old.

“Meet the Finch Robot” for children ages 7-10 will be an introduction to computers and coding. Four separate sessions will be held from 7-8 p.m. June 26 and from 4-5 p.m. July 14 at the main branch, or from 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 12 or 3:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Laurence Harbor branch.

“Intro to Coding with the Finch Robot” for children ages 8-13 will teach how to control a Finch with Snap!, a simple block-coding language. No previous computer experience is necessary for this three-session program. The classes will be offered from 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 20 and 27 and Aug. 3 at the main branch; or from 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 7 and 14 at the Laurence Harbor branch.

“Coding with the Finch Robot” is a slightly advanced version of Intro to Coding, with additional topics introduced as time permits. This two-session program is designed for kids ages 10-13 and will be held from 4-5 p.m. Aug. 4 and 11 at the main branch.

“Java Coding with the Finch Robot” is an introduction to Java coding and how it can be used to control a Finch. Geared for kids ages 13-17 with some computer knowledge, the four-session program will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 14-17 at the main branch.

Space is limited and in-person registration is required for all classes. Registration forms are available at the Youth Services Desk at both branches. The program is available to Old Bridge Library card holders only.
