JAMESBURG Comprised of more than 30 volunteers, the Jamesburg First Aid and Rescue Squad has been serving community residents for 80 years.

Established in 1937, the first aid squad is a nonprofit organization that was started by charter members whose names are on a plaque at the squad’s building, located at 227 Gatzmer Ave., according to Jamesburg First Aid and Rescue Squad’s President Della Fitch.

“The purpose of this organization [is] to save lives, relieve suffering, prevent injury, promote safety in all its branches, and to provide pre-hospital care, including Emergency Medical Services and ambulance service to the sick and injured, regardless of race, creed, color, religion or sexual orientation,” Fitch said.

Fitch has been volunteering for the squad for 25 years and said she joined, “To give back to my community and help people in need. I always wanted to be a nurse.”

Today, the squad has 15 active members, eight to 10 cadets, and 12 life members, according to Fitch.

Residents can show support for the organization, Fitch said, “Through coming out and volunteering their time to give back or donations. We raise all monies to keep our organization operating. We are always looking for good volunteers who can dedicate their time and effort to help us and their community.”

To join the squad, fill out an application via email or bring it to the building any day after 8 p.m

“We need responsible and dedicated people. It’s a big obligation to commit to,” Fitch said.
