SAYREVILLE – A new administrator in the Sayreville School District has been hired by the Board of Education following the death of his predecessor.

Michael Salum was hired as the supervisor of Social Studies, related arts and extracurricular activities by the board at a Dec. 19 meeting. His employment became effective on Jan. 2 and will extend through the end of the 2017-18 school year on June 30.

According to the district, Salum will receive a prorated salary of $94,275 for 2017-18.

“As you know, [Assistant Superintendent Marilyn] Shediack conducted a search for a new supervisor of Social Studies and related arts, and she was very impressed, as well as her entire committee, with the candidates that they had the opportunity to interview,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said. “But it is with great honor and pride that I recommend to you Mr. Michael Salum to be our next supervisor of Social Studies and related arts.

“I had the opportunity to meet briefly with Mr. Salum, as did our personnel committee, and was very impressed with his polished approach toward curriculum, instruction, as well as the great potential that I feel that he has as a leader in this school district,” Labbe said. “I know that upon your approval, he is going to be a welcome addition to our administrative team and most certainly to this district.”

Salum succeeded the late Thomas Gentile, who had been a member of the district from 2006-17. Gentile announced his plans to retire by the end of 2017, which was honored by the board, but died on Dec. 11, three weeks before his retirement would have become effective.

The board’s Dec. 19 meeting, which was the first meeting following Gentile’s death, began with a moment of silence in his memory.
