EDISON – The Edison Police Department is getting set to host two week-long Junior Police Academy sessions for local middle school students starting July 30.
Because of the Junior Police Academy’s popularity, Lt. Robert Dudash is suggesting parents act quickly to enroll their youngsters for their choice of sessions.
The first session will run from July 30 through Aug. 3 and the second session will run from Aug. 6-10. Each session runs daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School, 50 Woodrow Wilson Drive, Edison.
Edison’s Junior Police Academy is open to all township youngsters entering the sixth, seventh and eighth grades in September. The registration deadline is July 20.
Academy activities include driving while intoxicated and anti-drug education, personal safety instruction, and sports activities. There will be demonstrations involving police K-9s, emergency response, fire safety and suppression, motor vehicle stops, and a day trip to Point Pleasant, Ocean County, to the U.S. Coast Guard Facility and the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit.
Academy graduates receive a diploma during a ceremony held after the end of each session in the Township Council chambers. Family members and friends are invited to attend the ceremony.
Academy class sizes are limited. Students are selected on a first come, first serve basis. The program fee is $100 per session, payable to the Edison Municipal Alliance by check or money order. The fee covers lunches, snacks, refreshments, T-shirts, water bottles and other items.
