EAST BRUNSWICK – Due to a partnership between the East Brunswick Library and the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, gardeners will be able to get some “seed money” to start their first crops for the year.

The EB Grow seed library is housed inside the library on Civic Center Drive in an effort to introduce residents to gardening, provide education on seed-saving, and encourage patrons to develop a passion for sustainability. The seed library allows the community access to seeds to start their own garden without having to purchase the seeds themselves, according to information provided by the library.

The Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission applied for donations from organizations throughout the country, and qualified for grants including from Herman’s Garden Seed Donation Program.

“Many East Brunswick residents have an interest in gardening, whether it’s just as a hobby or as a tradition to feed their families,” Melissa Hozik, Adult Programming librarian, said in the statement. “By partnering with the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, we are excited to join other libraries throughout the country who offer seeds to their communities to encourage sustainability.”

Customers can come to the library to browse through a catalog seeds for flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables. As with other library materials, the seeds are free.

Gardeners are encouraged to save seeds from their own crops, or to donate seed packets for use by future gardeners, according to the statement.
