EAST BRUNSWICK–The crowd that swarmed to voice their concerns bout a mixed use development plan was too much for the auditorium at the Memorial Elementary School to accomodate.

More than 300 residents arrived at the East Brunswick Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting on June 7, a overflowed crowd that forced officials to call off the meeting.

HD Summerhill LLC is proposing to build three four-story residential buildings, a clubhouse, a CVS pharmacy, a bank, parking, lighting and landscaping on Summerhill Road on the border of East Brunswick and Spotswood. The plan includes 120 housing units, according to East Brunswick Zoning Officer/Planner Debra Rainwater. The application seeks variances, bulk variances and waivers, she said.

Representatives from HD Summerhill LLC were expected to present their plan to the Zoning Board on the evening of June 7. But the auditorium at school that is located at 14 Innes Road in East Brunswick was not large enough to handle the huge crowd.

“I have been informed by the fire marshal that the room has exceeded capacity and there are still at least 50 people waiting outside. Therefore, under the Open Public Meetings Act, this meeting cannot be held,” Board Attorney Alexander Fisher said at the onset of the meeting.

Fisher said the next meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. on July 16 at East Brunswick High School, located at 380 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Rainwater said the township is also looking at larger venues for that meeting.
