SAYREVILLE – After more than three decades at the Sayreville Middle School, a longtime science teacher is retiring from his position.

On Aug. 28, the Board of Education honored the retirement of Timothy Desmond, a science teacher at the Sayreville Middle School who taught grades 6-8. His retirement will become effective on Jan. 1.

According to Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe, Desmond has taught at the middle school for 33 years.

“He has touched all of our lives during his time here and we are sad to see him go. However, we know he is looking forward to spending more time with his family, as well as the opportunity to travel. In fact, I just saw him the other day and he truly was looking forward to the opportunity to see parts of this world that he has yet to see,” Labbe said. “Tim, we wish you the absolute very best in your travels and we cannot thank you enough for the outstanding service, the dedication [and] the commitment you’ve made to our students and our school district,” he said.

Board member Lucy Bloom also voiced praise for Desmond.

“Tim Desmond is a remarkable man,” Bloom said. “He loves science [and] when I was president of the education association, Tim was my grievance chairperson. In that time, I believe we filed four grievances, all of which we won. Not because Tim was great, because we were doing the right thing, but Tim was great. He knew exactly how to handle himself in every situation. I know the middle school will miss him and I will miss him.”
