NORTH BRUNSWICK – A Lidl grocery store will open next year in the North Brunswick Shopping Center, a long awaited replacement to the former A&P grocery that closed in 2015 following bankruptcy.

Construction is underway to subdivide the former A&P location, providing Lidl with more than 26,000 square feet of retail space, according to information provided by the North Brunswick Department of Community Development. A&P was roughly 55,000 square feet. Any other tenants are not known as of this time, according to Michael Hritz, director of Community Development.

The shopping center is off Georges and Milltown roads.

“I know this is welcoming news to many in our community, particularly our senior citizens who live in close proximity to the shopping center and have missed the opportunity to walk to a local grocery store,” Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack said in a prepared statement.

The Germany-based market has more than 10,000 stores in 29 countries. There are currently three Lidl stores operating in New Jersey, and the North Brunswick store is part of a statewide expansion, according to the statement.

Lidl products are almost entirely of their own private brand and customers provide their own bags, according to the statement.

“We are grateful to our partners at Levin Management who have long shared our interest in attracting a new grocery store to the shopping center and successfully negotiated this lease,” Michael Hritz, director of Community Development, said in the statement. “Lidl is a welcome new anchor for the shopping center and will certainly be welcomed by the local community.”

Hritz said he expects the store to open next spring.
