Senior leadership was the key to help the Hightstown High School boys’ basketball team battle back in the final three minutes to earn its sixth victory of the season on Jan. 7.

Hightstown rallied in the final minutes to post a 57-46 victory against its fellow Colonial Valley Conference foe, West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North, in Plainsboro.

Hightstown was trailing, 42-38, with 3:07 left to play, but it came back behind three successful free throws by senior Ben Simon. Those foul shots launched the Rams on a 19-4 surge to finish the contest and improve to 6-2 on the season.

“With having nine seniors on the team, we’re fortunate to have great leadership on our team,” said Hightstown coach Donald DeLeo. “They never say die. They continue to fight. They don’t put anyone down and they try to pick up everyone around them. We found a way to win in the end.”

Simon scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the second half to help Hightstown get the victory.

Junior Spencer Kenny anchored the impressive game-ending effort by the Rams, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the final three minutes.

Kenny’s first bucket in the final three minutes gave Hightstown a 43-42 lead. The junior scored all 12 of his points in the second half.

Senior Alex Kline knocked down five three-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points for West Windsor Plainsboro North, which slipped to 0-6 on the season.

Junior James Vinson scored nine points in the loss for the Knights.
