SAYREVILLE – Two third grade students from Sayreville will have stories they wrote published in an anthology of tales from young voices.

Emma Burns and Katherine Livshina, third grade students at Our Lady of Victories School in Sayreville, were selected to receive recognition in Young Writers’ Spooky Sagas contest, which took place in October. Young Writers hosts contests for school-age writers to have their works appear in published collections.

For the Spooky Sagas contest, students were allowed to submit one entry that had a 100-word limit. Over 10,000 entries were received, according to the school, with Emma and Katherine being among those to be featured in the anthology.

According to the school, the anthology will be entitled Spooky Sagas 2019 Mid-Atlantic Tales and is scheduled for publication on Feb. 29. A copy of the book containing Emma and Kathrine’s work will be sent to The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to provide a record of their achievement.

“The aim at Young Writers has been to get kids to be passionate and confident writers and for all students to have a realistic chance of seeing their work in print,” said Jennifer Kabara, the students’ third grade teacher. “Young Writers encourage children to enjoy creative writing. Young Writers were really impressed with Emma and Kathrine’s writing. They chose the stories based on imagination, creativity and expression.

“I am very proud of both Emma and Katherine,” Kabara continued. “The use of imagination and creativity was evident in their stories. Both students enjoyed writing their tales. We are all super excited and can’t wait to see their writing published into the book. It is really exciting to have two authors in our class. I am hoping that this will promote the students to keep writing and use their imagination to go on adventures.”
