Freehold Borough school board approves contract for improvements

FREEHOLD – A $1.12 million contract has been authorized by the Freehold Borough K-8 School District Board of Education for improvements to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at the district’s two facilities.

Board members awarded the contract to Burlew Mechanical, LLC, South Amboy, for the removal and replacement of HVAC units at the Freehold Learning Center elementary school, Dutch Lane Road, and at the Park Avenue Complex, which houses the Park Avenue Elementary School and the Freehold Intermediate School.

Burlew Mechanical was awarded the contract as the lowest responsible bidder, according to district administrators.

According to district administrators, Burlew Mechanical submitted a base bid of $964,000, a $14,700 bid for ceiling replacement in the special programs office at the Park Avenue Complex, a $138,600 bid for HVAC renovations at the Freehold Learning Center and an $18,200 bid for HVAC renovations at the superintendent’s office, for a total $1,135,500.

The contract that was awarded to Burlew Mechanical consists of the $964,000 base bid, the $14,700 bid for ceiling replacement in the special services office and the $138,600  bid for HVAC renovations at the Freehold Learning Center, for a total of $1,117,300.

Other bids were received from Chappelle Mechanical ($1.19 million), Sunnyfield Corporation ($1.22 million), SRJ Mechanical ($1.3 million), Comfort Mechanical ($1.3 million), EACM Corp. ($1.56 million) and Kappa Construction ($1.84 million).

The improvements will consist of the installation of new HVAC units in 10 classrooms and the special programs office at the Park Avenue Complex, ceiling replacement in the special programs office and the replacement of two rooftop HVAC units at the Freehold Learning Center, according to district administrators.

The board requested the approval of a capital reserve withdrawal in the amount of up to $1.05 million. For the replacement of the two rooftop HVAC units, board members authorized the appropriation of up to $149,600 from the maintenance reserve.
