The Township of East Brunswick will hold “A Moment of Remembrance” marking the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C. and the hijacked plane crash in Pennsylvania at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 outdoors at the Sept. 11 monument at the East Brunswick Municipal Complex, 1 Civic Center Drive. The event will be held rain or shine.

A candlelight vigil will remember the eight East Brunswick residents and all those who lost their lives on that tragic day. Participants will also honor the heroic efforts of the thousands of first responders, rescue teams and volunteers who selflessly assisted that day and all the days that followed.

Additionally, this year’s group of high school students are the first to be born after the events of 2001. As such, Mayor Brad Cohen is prompting any East Brunswick student in high school grade to write an essay about the following:

The people listed on the East Brunswick Sept. 11 memorial are different than all the others mentioned or celebrated in Memorial Park. None of these individuals woke up on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, expecting to be heroes and none of them expected to be memorialized.

You are the first complete group of high school students to have been born after this horrific event in American history. What message or lesson can your generation of youth gain from this sad chapter in our history? What would you tell these individuals about our country, your generation of Americans and our future that could possibly provide hope worthy of the sacrifice they made?

Any high school student wishing to participate in the essay contest must submit their essay via email to mayor@eastbrunswick.org by 9 a.m. Sept. 9. Winning essays will be read at the observance by the writer, with a prize given.

The public is invited to attend the vigil on Sept. 11.
