Donning gloves and bearing shovels, nearly 30 volunteers visited Rosedale Park in Pennington on Oct. 27 to plant trees and celebrate a sustainability campaign that will result in 25,000 tree plantings in communities where ShopRite stores operate.

In partnership with Kimberly-Clark and One Tree Planted, the event highlighted a joint effort to help protect the environment and build a more sustainable future, according to information provided by ShopRite. More than 75 trees were planted as part of the event at Rosedale Park.

“ShopRite stores have made it a priority to protect the environment, and planting trees is one part of a larger overall commitment to make our air cleaner, control erosion and beautify our communities,” Robert Zuehlke, manager of Corporate Social Responsibility for ShopRite, said in the statement. “We could not be more proud to partner with Kimberly-Clark and One Tree Planted in our collective efforts to help create healthier neighborhoods.”

The ongoing campaign that started last year will result in trees plantings in states where ShopRite stores operate, including New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.

“Kimberly-Clark is excited to partner with ShopRite and One Tree Planted to help build a world that fosters a green and sustainable future,” Peggy Murphy, sustainability leader for Kimberly-Clark North America, said in the statement. “This is one of the many ways Kimberly-Clark is working to help the natural systems we all depend on to live better lives.”

“We’re honored to work with ShopRite and Kimberly Clark on this reforestation initiative to plant 25,000 trees with One Tree Planted by 2021. That’s a lot of trees to help clean the air and water, sequester carbon, and enhance biodiversity. It’s also a great benefit to local communities because being around trees contributes to long-term health. The more we can work together, the more of a positive impact we can have for people and the planet,” Matt Hill, chief environmental evangelist for One Tree Planted, said in the statement.

For more than four decades, Wakefern Food Corp., the retailer owned cooperative that includes nearly 280 ShopRite stores, has worked to protect the environment, conserve natural resources, and assist communities where stores operate. Last year alone, Wakefern donated 5,000 tons of food to local food banks, composted more than 11,000 tons of food waste, and since the late 1970’s has recycled more than 2.6 million tons of materials, according to the statement.
