EAST BRUNSWICK – In honor of military service members, both past and present, township officials and the East Brunswick Veterans Alliance hosted a Memorial Day Observance at Veteran’s Park.

On May 29, a mixture of residents, veterans’ groups, and municipal officials gathered at the East Brunswick Municipal Complex to recognize and remember the sacrifices made by military heroes.

The event featured a series of special tributes that included a veteran’s ceremony, flag raising, wreath presentation, paver dedication and mini concert.

According to Ashley Faulcon, the program coordinator for Youth and Community Services at East Brunswick’s Recreation and Parks Department, the event garnered widespread interest from the community with an estimated 250 people in attendance.

Faulcon explained that each tribute honored veterans by addressing specific aspects of their service. She stated that these types of community events create an environment of unity and appreciation.

“I believe that it is important to host events honoring those who have served and are currently serving because it not only brings the community together, but it also gives our community the opportunity to thank the individuals who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedom,” Faulcon said.

In addition to different community organizations, Captain Frank Sutter of the East Brunswick Police Department and Mayor Brad Cohen also participated in the ceremonies.

“During the Memorial Day Observance, our scout troops and packs lined the walkway for our veterans, police, fire, and community members.

“The sea cadets and scouts brought in their Color Guard and Honor Guard. Our veterans raised the American and POW (Prisoner of War) flags and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Our sea cadets and community members laid the wreaths for the veterans’ groups and community organizations.

“Captain Frank Sutter was the guest speaker for our event and he spoke of his extensive and decorated background as a service member. Mayor Cohen served as the masters of ceremonies for our observance. Lastly, the community of East Brunswick showed up to support our veterans and active servicemembers in full,” she said.

According to Faulcon, the event’s overall message centered around never forgetting the individual humanity of each military service member. Furthermore, she credited the township’s enthusiasm and involvement in recognizing the importance of Memorial Day.

“We can never forget the work they have done because we wouldn’t be here as a community today without their dedication to this country.

“The overall message from the Memorial Day Observance was that every day, we should honor the brave men and women who have fought, and who continue to fight, for this country.

“As a community, we need to always support and fight for those who have supported and fought for us. East Brunswick’s Veterans’ organizations are the heart and soul of our town, and we are so fortunate to have them.

“East Brunswick’s Memorial Day Observance was a true testament as to how our town celebrates our veterans and active service members. We cherish them and we thank them for all they do,” Faulcon said.
