Four newly elected school board members – two veterans and two newcomers – were sworn into office at the East Windsor Regional School District Board of Education’s annual reorganization meeting last week.
Incumbent school board members Alice Weisman and Jenna Drake were sworn into office for three-year terms, along with newcomers Christina Lands and Colleen Murphy at the Jan. 7 meeting.
Weisman, Lands and Murphy represent East Windsor Township on the school board and Drake represents Hightstown Borough.
Lands was the top vote-getter with 3,987 votes, followed by Murphy with 3,102 votes and Weisman with 3,096 votes. Drake earned 1,119 votes.
But between the Nov. 8 general election and the school board reorganization meeting, school board member Erica DiRaimondo resigned. Once the new members were sworn into office, the full board interviewed three candidates to fill the open seat representing East Windsor Township.
Following a closed-door meeting to interview the three candidates, the school board chose former school board member Robert Laverty to fill the vacancy. He had sought re-election in November, but fell short of votes. He will serve until Jan. 2020.
The school board also chose its officers for 2019. The school board elected Weisman to serve as the school board president, and also chose Ram Ramachandran to be the school board vice president.
And following tradition, each school board member read aloud a paragraph from the New Jersey School Boards Association Code of Ethics for school board members.
In other business, the school board adopted the routine items needed to reorganize and carry out its activities – from setting the dates for the school board meetings to approving the superintendent of schools and the business administrator to implement the school budget.
