The quick actions of a Lawrence Township police officer meant the difference between life and death for a 4-year-old girl who was choking on a piece of candy.

Officer Bartosz Chojnowski was working on a special duty road job on Carson Road when he saw a car pull off to the side of the road shortly before 10 a.m. on June 14, according to the Lawrence Township Police Department.

The driver, who was visibly upset, got out of the car. Officer Chojnowski went over to the driver, who told him that her 4-year-old daughter was unresponsive and not breathing. She was choking on a piece of candy.

Officer Chojnowski took the girl out of the car and began to perform life-saving measures, dislodging the piece of candy from her throat, police said. The girl began to respond and began to breathe again.

The child and her family, who live in Hopewell Township, were so grateful that they came to the Lawrence Township Police Department on June 18 to express their thanks and to see Officer Chojnowski.

And as a sign of their gratitude, the Hopewell Township family provided lunch for the employees who were working when they visited the Police Department.
