FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The longest-serving member of Freehold Township’s governing body will leave his position during the first week of 2020.

At a Dec. 17 meeting, Republican Committeeman David Salkin announced that he will leave the Township Committee at the 2020 reorganization meeting on Jan. 3. Salkin’s departure follows his hiring as the Monmouth County consumer affairs director. Working in that job will preclude him from holding elected office.

Salkin, a lifelong resident of Freehold Township, joined the committee in 1994 and is currently the longest-serving member on the dais.

Prior to being named consumer affairs director, he had a career in the jewelry business and has also worked as a full-time author. Salkin also worked as the executive director of the Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce. He was named consumer affairs director in October.

Salkin acknowledged his departure in his praise of Barbara McMorrow, whose current term on the Township Committee will end on Dec. 31.

McMorrow, a retired educator, did not seek re-election this year and will conclude a career in public service that also saw her serve on the Borough Council in Freehold Borough and on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders.

After Salkin’s seat is vacated, the local Republican Party will provide the names of candidates for the position to the Township Committee.

The resident who is appointed by the committee members will serve through 2020 and may seek election to a three-year term in November.

The Township Committee in 2020 will consist of Thomas L. Cook, Lester A. Preston Jr., Anthony Ammiano, Maureen Fasano, who will join the governing body on Jan. 3, and the individual who is appointed to succeed Salkin.
