A hard fought Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division showdown between the Old Bridge High School and J.P. Stevens High School girls’ basketball teams was played on Jan. 14 in Old Bridge.
The winner from this battle was Old Bridge, which held on for a 57-54 victory over the Hawks to improve to 5-4 on the season.
“This a good win for us,” said Old Bridge coach Alec Alspach. “We’ve been bouncing back-and-forth from being over .500 to staying at .500. I’m hoping we can now get a couple wins under our belts and get on a roll to help us in the Red Division and going into the conference tournament.”
Old Bridge took control of the contest in the third quarter with the game tied at 32-32, going on a 9-2 surge to end the quarter and take a 41-34 lead.
Senior Rachel Kuhl was a big part of Old Bridge’s success in the second half, scoring 15 of her team-high 23 points. Kuhl was on fire from three-point range all night, knocking down five three-pointers in the contest.
Fellow classmate Mia Alcorn delivered 13 points in the victory and also had a great night from three-point range, ringing in three shots from behind the arch, all of which coming in the third quarter.
Old Bridge hit a total of nine three-pointers in the contest.
Senior Megan Duffy led the way for J.P. Stevens, scoring a game-high 29 points.
Sophomore Karly Wittenbauer knocked in 13 points for the Hawks, who dropped to 3-6 on the season.
