Pennington officials are looking to bolster the borough police department with an additional officer.

The Pennington Police Department is currently made up of five full-time sworn police officers and a part-time civilian assistant to the chief of police. Through an approved resolution Pennington Council members authorized the advertisement for an additional police officer at an Aug. 3 Borough Council meeting.

“A sixth full-time sworn officer would aid the department for many reasons; lower overtime, officer safety (currently there is only one officer on per shift), and lessen up on fatigue (mandatory overtime when vacation or injury happens),” Chief of Police Doug Pinelli added.

Borough Administrator Eileen Heinzel said the borough will conduct interviews and when an officer is finally chosen a resolution would head to the Borough Council in September authorizing the hiring of the selected police officer.
