SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Eight police officers made sure a township teenager had a bicycle after his was stolen.
A woman told officers that her 14-year-old grandson’s bicycle was reportedly stolen out of the back of his father’s car on Timberline Court on Aug. 17, according to a statement prepared by the South Brunswick Police Department.
As the officers were investigating the incident, the woman reportedly informed them of personal issues her grandson has had throughout his life.
Sgt. Michael Kuchma, Officer William Merkler, Officer John Niper, Officer Domenick DeLucia, Officer William Bonura, Officer Bryan Garrison, Officer Gagan Chopra and Officer Aaron Parks decided they wanted to do something for the young boy, so they pitched in to buy him a new bicycle. The officers went to the South Brunswick Target on Route 1 and purchased him a new bicycle and a lock.
On Aug. 21, the officers showed up at the home and gave the teen his new bike. The 14-year-old and his grandmother were overjoyed with emotion, according to the report.
“These officers truly went above and beyond what is expected of them. We are so thankful for what they have done,” Florence Gutterman said.
“These are the kind of officers who make up the outstanding department we have,” said Police Chief Raymond Hayducka. “They wanted to make sure this teen that is going through a difficult time in his life had a bicycle and they pulled together and made it possible. This is another great example of the special bond between the South Brunswick Police Department and the residents of the community.”
The investigation into the theft is ongoing.
