SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The South Brunswick Police Department has received several reports about a scam involving a person(s) claiming to work for Microsoft Tech Support.

As part of the scam, the caller informs the victim that he or she must remotely log into the resident’s computer to fix problems with Microsoft software, according to information released by the South Brunswick Police Department. Once remotely logged in, the scammers access banking and other personal information and then use that information to drain bank accounts of money.

The most recent phone number used by the person committing scam was 847-991-3111, police said.

Citizens are urged to be cautious of phone calls in which they are asked for personal information or access to personal computers or accounts.

Microsoft will not make unsolicited calls for technical issues, police said. Residents should not purchase any software or services, give control of any computer to a third party unless confirmation is received that the person is a legitimate representative of a computer support team or provide credit card or financial information.
