With former board member Kevin McEvoy resigning in order to become the township’s mayor, the district is looking for candidates to fill his seat.

According to District Business Administrator and Board of Education Secretary Bernardo Giuliana, the candidate chosen will serve a one-year term, concluding at the board’s January 2017 reorganization meeting.

McEvoy resigned the morning of Feb. 8 and was appointed mayor that night by the Township Council. The appointment follows the resignation of former Mayor David Stahl, who left to become a municipal judge in Woodbridge Township.

McEvoy’s seat will be up for grabs during the November general election. The winner will serve out the remainder of McEvoy’s term, which ends in 2019.

Candidates will be interviewed at one of the board’s public meetings, with a decision being made in closed session. According to Giuliana, the board has until April 13, 60 days since McEvoy’s resignation, to choose a replacement.

The board governs the district’s 11 Blue Ribbon schools. According to data from the New Jersey Department of Education, for the 2014-15 school year the district enrolled over 8,000 students.

Residents of the township interested in becoming a member of the board may obtain an application package by writing to the School Business Administrator/Board Secretary, East Brunswick Public Schools, 760 Route 18, Suite 108, East Brunswick 08816 or calling 732-613-6723.

Requirements for consideration include being 18 or over, a U.S citizen and living in the township for at least a year.
