MONROE – Mayor Gerald W. Tamburro and the children of Christina Addeo’s first grade class at Oak Tree School said happy birthday to Dr. Seuss by reading the famed children’s author’s classic books “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham” together on March 4.

“What better way is there to celebrate the life and works of Dr. Seuss than reading one of his most beloved books to such an attentive first grade class?” Tamburro said.

The reading was part of the township’s celebration of Read Across America, the National Endowment of the Arts’ country-wide event where teachers, teenagers, librarians, government officials, actors, athletes, parents and grandparents bring reading excitement to children of all ages.

“It is important that we continue to celebrate the written word,” Tamburro said. “Dr. Seuss continues to be one of the most well regarded children’s authors, and his whimsical stories provide a fun way to get children interested in reading at an early age.”

In addition, Council President Leslie Koppel, Councilwoman Elizabeth Schneider and Councilman Blaise Dipierro all read to classes at Oak Tree School.

“The council was excited to spend time sharing their passion for reading with the Oak Tree students,” Tamburro said. “It is always a nice change of pace for us to get out of the municipal building and spend time with the younger members of our community.”
