Officers reportedly observed an individual walking down the railroad tracks, and as they attempted to make contact, he allegedly fled the area into the woods between Fifth Street and Sixth Street.

Patrol units along with the assistance of the South River Police Department, East Brunswick Independent Fire Company and New Jersey State Police K-9 unit searched the area for the suspect with negative results.

On June 14 at approximately 8 a.m., Patrolman Maria Miller was on patrol and reportedly observed an individual walking in the area of Ryders Lane and Hollis Road who matched the description of the suspect. Further investigation revealed that McCoy had traveled to New Jersey from California and he had allegedly taken the handgun from his father while in California.

He was also listed in the national database as a missing person; his father had reported him missing to California authorities. His father was subsequently notified.
