FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – Traffic on both sides of Route 9 in Freehold Township came to a halt on a busy Thursday afternoon after an accident caused telephone poles to collapse on the northbound and southbound sides of the state highway.

On July 1, Freehold Township Police Sgt. Scot Hall said that just after noon on June 30, a tractor-trailer caught a telephone wire that was sagging over the travel lanes on Route 9. As the truck caught the wire and continued on the highway, utility poles collapsed on both sides of the road.

Police were called to the scene at 12:35 p.m. and closed the northbound and southbound sides of Route 9 to clear the highway of debris. Hall said three vehicles on the southbound side of Route 9 sustained minor damage, but no injuries were reported.

Hall did not say if the truck driver was heading north or south. The driver was not at the scene when police officers arrived. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
