EAST BRUNSWICK — Members of the East Brunswick Police Anti-Crime Unit observed a female in the Brunswick Square Mall parking lot in East Brunswick allegedly handing drugs to a male who was seated in a motor vehicle around 6:25 p.m. July 28.
Judith Spear of Old Bridge allegedly walked away from the motor vehicle, according to a statement prepared by the East Brunswick Police Department.
The male, later identified as Shabazz Muhammad of Somerset, allegedly fled the scene in a white 2005 Acura after being approached by members of the Anti-Crime Unit, police said.
The vehicle was reportedly pursued onto Route 18 north near Cindy Way by the Anti-Crime Unit, but the pursuit was terminated almost immediately due to what police described as Muhammad’s erratic and reckless driving, according to the statement. A short time later, Muhammad was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run accident on Old Bridge Turnpike at the intersection of Parker Street and allegedly fled the scene toward Edgeboro Road.
Ptl. John Sisolak observed the 2005 white Acura and Muhammad, who was allegedly out of the vehicle on foot, near Brick Plant Road. Muhammad was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Spear was charged with possession of heroin, distribution of heroin and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance in a school zone. She was released pending court.
Muhammad was charged with the same charges, as well as eluding and aggravated assault. He was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $35,000 bail.
