EDISON — A lit candle left unattended in a second floor bathroom apparently caused a fire at a Candy Court residence last week.
There were no reported injuries as township firefighters battled freezing temperatures while bringing the house fire under control. The blaze started at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, according to Fire Chief Brian Latham.
With help from firefighters, the family, who were home at the time, was rescued along with their five dogs from inside the house, according to fire officials.
There were no smoke detectors in the house causing a delay in the time it took for the three family members to notice and report the fire, Latham explained.
Fire damage to the home’s interior has left it uninhabitable, the chief said adding that he would recommend that candles should not be used indoors.
Emergency crews from JFK Medical Center were on the scene and tents with heaters were set up on the street to keep the home’s occupants and firefighters warm as temperatures were in the low 20s.
