Richard Ferris will present “Opera Topics — In Praise of Women Part I — Heroic Women” at 10 a.m. Jan. 17 at The Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County, 1775 Oak Tree Rd., Edison.

No previous knowledge of opera is necessary as this program is designed to inform and entertain newcomers to opera as well as opera enthusiasts. All that is required is enthusiasm for opera and a desire to learn more about how opera treats particular subjects in different ways.

This program will introduce and explore a selection of operas which feature as their main character women in situations requiring great courage and nobility of character in order to have the strength to sacrifice for goals for which they must risk their happiness and, at times, even their lives to save a loved one.

With operas’ unmatched arias of beauty, genius and power enhancing these stories, see and hear examples of devotion, sacrifice, love, honor and responsibility. Compositions by Beethoven, Puccini, Verdi and others will be featured.

The cost is $8 for Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County members or $11 for nonmembers. For more information, contact Sue Horwitz, director of Senior Adult Services, at 732-494-3232, ext. 3603.
