MILLSTONE – The Township Committee is taking action to improve roads in the municipality.
On Feb. 15, committee members passed a resolution to award a $689,343 contract to Meco Inc. for work on Millstone Township’s 2016 Roadway Improvement Program.
According to municipal officials, the improvements will involve milling and resurfacing the following roads: Stillhouse Road from Sweetsman Lane to Baird Road; Roberts Road from Woodville Road to Forman Road; the south portion of Battleground Road; a portion of Spring Road; Emmons Drive; Scotto Drive and Rooney Court.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation will fund up to $225,000 of the Stillhouse Road portion of the project, according to the resolution.
Bids for the 2016 Roadway Improvement Program were accepted on Feb. 9, according to the resolution.
In addition to Meco, the following companies submitted bids for the work: C.J. Hesse Inc., $971,000; Jads Construction Co. Inc., $926,506; Black Rock Enterprises LLC, $925,826; New Prince Concrete Construction Co. Inc., $874,221; S&G Paving, $858,897; P&A Construction Inc., $842,527; Z Brothers Concrete Contractors Inc., $836,233; Earle Asphalt, $793,713; and Lucas Brothers Inc., $784,153.
Because Meco submitted the lowest bid, Township Engineer Matt Shafai recommended that the company be awarded the contract.
And, committee members passed a resolution approving the submission of a grant application and the execution of a grant agreement with the DOT for the first phase of improvements to Nurko Road.
The first phase of improvements to Nurko Road will be from Route 571 at the border of Roosevelt to Parkside Way in Millstone Township. The improvements will involve milling and resurfacing the road.
The construction estimate for the first phase of the Nurko Road improvements is $437,500. Officials said $300,000 in state funds are anticipated to help cover the costs and the township will pay the remaining $137,500 toward construction, administrative and engineering costs, according to the resolution.
In other business, committee members appointed Ray Dothard as a permanent member of the Millstone Township Veterans Memorial Council. Dothard has been a resident for more than 25 years. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Dothard’s appointment follows a request from the Veterans Memorial Council for new members. In January, a notice was posted on Millstone’s website to inform residents that the council was seeking active military personnel or veterans to join the panel.
