SOUTH BRUNSWICK — After a three-month investigation, detectives have charged two suspects in connection to a burglary at a residence in the Point at Turnbury development in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Detectives charged James O’Connor, 38, and Derrick McCaskill, 51, both of North Brunswick. O’Connor was charged with burglary and theft, and McCaskill was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.

The burglary occurred during the day on Dec. 23, 2016, in which a safe with jewelry and cash was stolen. O’Connor had done some handiwork in the development in early December and became familiar with when residents were at home, police alleged.

After the burglary was reported, detectives canvassed the neighborhood and recovered surveillance video showing two suspects manipulating video cameras in the area. The nearby surveillance footage from the day of the burglary showed a silver pickup truck with a box-shaped object resembling a safe in the bed of the truck. The suspects also placed a cardboard cutout over the rear license plate so the plate could not be seen, police said.

Detectives utilized the surveillance footage to identify the suspect’s truck, according to reports. The truck was then traced to the suspect’s residence in North Brunswick, police said. Detectives obtained search warrants which revealed additional physical evidence that allegedly placed O’Connor and McCaskill at the scene in December.

McCaskill was charged at his residence with the assistance of the North Brunswick police.  O’Connor was charged by the Long Beach Township Police and turned over to South Brunswick detectives. Both O’Connor and McCaskill were released pending their next court appearance.
