The College of Education at Rider University has announced that the National Writing Project@Rider University has been awarded a $15,000 grant funded by the US Department of Education to support an invitational literacy leadership institute for teachers and an outreach program for area youth writers.
The funds will help support two literacy programs during the summer of 2017 at Rider:
• A blended invitational literacy institute for area K-12 teachers. Participants will meet on-site at the College of Education at Rider University from July 10 to July 13 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) with online follow up and support throughout the fall of 2017. Participants will have the opportunity to develop as writers as well as teachers of writers and have access to the most current research and pedagogy about literacy instruction. Daily guest speakers as well as interactive workshop experiences will inform this work. Participants will engage in deep study and leave with transformative practices to support youth and adolescent writers and their colleagues who work with these populations. Graduate course credit is available, but not required for participation. $275 if registered before April 30, $295 if registered after May 1.
• A young writers camp from July 10 to July 13 and from July 17 to July 20 (9 a.m. to noon each day) that will allow rising third through eighth graders to study the craft of writing in an interactive workshop setting. Children will have daily access to digital tools to expand their understanding of the composing process. The participants will be led by expert NWP@Rider teacher leaders. The fee is $250 for the full program.
