ALLENTOWN – The Borough Council has accepted a recommendation from the Personnel Committee and will require the person who serves as Allentown’s zoning officer, code enforcement officer and housing inspector to wear a body camera while working and interacting with members of the public.
Joseph McGrath currently holds all three positions in the borough.
Mayor Greg Westfall said Borough Attorney Greg Cannon informed officials that certain employees in Aberdeen Township are wearing body cameras during their interactions with the public. Cannon serves as a councilman in Aberdeen Township.
Allentown council members passed a resolution on May 9 putting the policy in place and describing the policy as “an added layer of protection.” The resolution states that “the use of body cameras by municipal employees is becoming more common and seen as a best practice.”
The policy was approved by council President Wil Borkowski and council members Rob Schmitt, Johnna Stinemire, Robert Strovinsky, Thomas Fritts and Angela Anthony.
Allentown police officers do not wear body cameras at this time.
