Freehold Township pursues road, recreational improvements

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The Township Committee has introduced a $6.8 million bond ordinance that will provide funding for planned capital improvements in Freehold Township.

The bond ordinance was introduced during a committee meeting on May 23. It is scheduled for a public hearing and adoption on June 27.

The ordinance appropriates $6.8 million for capital improvements and authorizes the issuance of $6.5 million in bonds or notes to help finance the costs.

According to the ordinance, the capital improvements are as follows:

  • Road improvements, including, but not limited to concrete overlay at various roads, culvert replacement at Hampton Drive, design of Three Brooks Road and geographic information system engineering database mapping; total, $2.8 million
  • Recreation improvements, including, but not limited to Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades at Opatut Park, resurfacing courts, replacement of bleachers, water fountains and irrigation improvements at various parks, repairs to maintenance shop, office and pavilions, renovations to dugouts and ballfields at various parks, renovation of bathrooms at Michael J. Tighe Park and an addition to the senior center and expansion of the senior center parking lot; total, $2.4 million
  • Building improvements, including, but not limited to a new roof, gutters and electrical upgrades to various municipal buildings, improvements to the public works building, including but not limited to lighting, portable column lifts, oil reels and pumps, office partitions and furniture, and paving for fuel island and recycling center; total $1 million
  • The purchase of vehicles, including, but not limited to a dump truck, field sprayer, sport utility vehicle and lift gates for a pickup truck; total $390,000
  • The purchase of equipment, including, but not limited to the acquisition of computers, computer system upgrades and stationary license plate reader cameras for the Freehold Raceway Mall; total, $165,000
  • Underground storage tank remediation at the Department of Public Works complex; total, $30,000.

In other business, the committee introduced an ordinance that, if adopted, will appropriate $250,000 for interconnection water meters, valve replacements, upgrades to the Jackson Mills water treatment plant and to rebuild a wet well at the Elton Corner pump station. The ordinance is scheduled for a public hearing and adoption on June 27.
