MILLTOWN — The increased workload and attrition concerns within the borough’s municipal court has led to the promotion of a part-time municipal court employee to full time.

After some discussion, the Borough Council approved the promotion at a council meeting on June 13.

Mayor Eric Steeber said part of the problem is that municipal court functions fall beyond borough government oversight and instead under the state government.

Over the past few years, the borough’s municipal court has seen seven part-time employees, he said.

“[The state government] could come in and say hire two [full-time] people,” Steeber said.

The annual salary for the full-time position is $68,370, which includes pension and health benefits.

Officials said discussions with North Brunswick to share a municipal court position did not come to fruition.

Councilman Nicholas Ligotti said he was concerned, since the shared service would be for 20 hours and cost $34,000.

Councilwoman Doriann Kerber said she knows the workload in the municipal court has progressively increased.

“Help is needed now,” she said. “I think it’s an important move for the town to consider.”

Councilmen Richard Revolinsky and Jerry Guthlein agreed.

Revolinsky said in light of the attrition concerns, he believed the promotion was a smart move.
